Common Interior Design Mistakes to Avoid
Designing your personal space is exciting. But at times one can be overwhelmed while taking decisions and they may prove to be a mistake. There may be rules and regulations while doing the interior of your home but slip-ups do happen.
There is a lot of information available to avoid common interior mistakes like odd or certain color combinations. An interior design error can become a costly mistake and needs to be avoided. Here are the most common mistakes one can make while redesigning your home.
1. Accenting
Accenting or highlighting the wrong wall can draw attention to unwanted features or things like murals, unattractive home fittings, doors, appliances, among others. No need to completely avoid accenting – the best walls are fireplace and bed head walls.
2. Furniture
Do not overload furniture in your home. Every corner does not need furniture. Corners get piled on making the room look overloaded, cluttered and tacky. Too much furniture on the perimeter of the room makes it look smaller. Give away or remove furniture that does not fit or serve your purpose. Make sure you make a good seating arrangement so that everyone can see each other. If empty corners make you uncomfortable then place an artwork or potted plant.
3. Storage
Lack of storage units can make your home look cluttered. This will stress you out to just look for keys, bills or stuff you require. Be very practical while getting yourself storage for your belongings. With practical furnishings, storage units can be designed and budgeted according to your storage needs. Make sure you declutter your house before you design any storage units. Discard the things you do not need or do not use any longer.
4. Following trends
You can buy anything from the current fads like accessories, cushion covers, wallpaper, flooring, etc. But you should know that trends are for a short period. You can first try the trend in a small space or temporarily living space. Trends like trims, trinkets may or may not suit your living space. Hence, get a clear picture of your interiors from a professional interior designer before you invest in any of the current interior design trends and styles.
5. Disposable elements
You can go for a disposable design like a motif or textile which you can easily replace after a few months. Don’t overspend on anything that you may not like after a few months. Before buying just ask yourself if you will still love the interior design, style, or trend after a few days, weeks or months. Wait until you can get the right item or until you can buy it. Research well before you invest.
6. Lighting
Lighting may be a small element in interior design, but it can play a major role in giving your house an aesthetic appeal and style. Lighting should be layered to give the best effect. One single overhead light will cast shadows. The layered effect – you should have 8 light sources which will illuminate the dark spots – lamps, string lights, highlight the artwork, focal points, kitchen worktops, bathroom mirrors, and candles. Each light alters the mood of the room.
You can do what your family or friends would like you to do but you should take their ideas and suggestions and trust your instincts and give importance to your preferences. You will have to live with the end result and many mistakes cannot be rectified. Make sure you choose the right interior design styles that suit your requirements. Keep the above mentioned interior design mistakes to avoid regret.
