The Beginners Guide to Eyeshadow Application

When it comes to doing face makeup, nothing is more intimidating than eyeshadow. The eyeshadow is a beauty kit essential. It is effective in making the wearers’ eyes stand out and look more attractive. Eyeshadow can add depth and dimension to your eyes as well and can make your eyes appear larger, compliment your clothes and accessories, complement your eyes, or just simply draw attention to them. As a beginner, here are a few points to help you understand the preparation and application of eyeshadow makeup and the tools to apply shadows

1. Where to apply

The part of our eye right above the eyelash is called the crease and the part between the crease and the eyebrow is known as the brow bone. The eyeshadow is applied on both the crease and brow bone.

2. Tools you’ll need

The things that you need to apply eyeshadow are a primer, eyeshadow palette, and brushes.

Primer is a base that helps the eyeshadow to stay on longer on the eyes. It also helps the eyeshadow to appear bolder and brighter. The primer brings out the exact shade of shadow as you see in the palette. Primers also prevent the eyeshadow from creasing.

There are many types of brushes used to apply eyeshadow—one to shade, one to blend, one to create lines, and one to smudge.

3. Types of eyeshadow

There are many types of eyeshadow available. Cream eyeshadows are best to use both as a base and single color coverage. If you use this, you do not need to use a primer. Loose pigment eyeshadows offer many colors but needs practice and skill to apply and can also be messy. This is preferred by professionals as it gives an intense look. Gel eyeshadows can be used as liners and are applied with an angle brush. Eyeshadows are also available as crayons and are used to cover the eyelid. Whereas pressed eyeshadow is the most commonly used as they are the least messy.

If you have a four palette eyeshadow kit, you should use the lightest shade for the brow bone. The second lightest is used for your eyelid. The darkest is used for the eye corners and the second darkest is used for the crease. There are two and three palette kits available as well and each shade has a specific purpose.

If you are using colored eyeshadow, use colors that match your eye or your dress. Also, use eyeliner colors that match the eyeshadow. Any mismatch will be glaringly obvious and can spoil the look that you are aiming to achieve.

4. How to apply eyeshadow

  • Use small strokes and dabbing motions to apply the eyeshadow color.
  • Use a blending brush to blend the color.
  • Draw a shape using an eyebrow pencil and then blend so that the edges fade away.
  • When you practice, tilt your head slightly upwards and look down into the mirror so that you get the right angle of your eye.
